Just yesterday, Samsung started sending out invites to its second Unpacked 2012 event at IFA in Berlin, where we believe the company will unveil the successor to the Galaxy Note. Just now, a second invitation just hit our inbox for the previously announced Galaxy event on August 15th.

1[4]

Giving credit to previous speculation, the flyer heavily suggests that we'll see the long-awaited Galaxy Note 10.1, along with the tagline "Meet the new way."

An official announcement is the last piece needed to complete the puzzle that has been the Galaxy Note 10.1. After all, we've already seen the newly redesigned device on more than one occasion and even taken a look at its full spec list.

While most Android fans are clamoring to get their hands on a new Nexus 7, there are still those who prefer the size and feel of a 10" tablet. And for good reason: a 7" tablet is fantastic for reading, surfing the web, and even watching movies, but it's just lacking much-needed screen real estate when it comes to productivity.

Speaking of productivity, who wants a free Transformer Prime with dock? Good, because we have one to give away. Keep reading to find out how to enter.

Samsung Officially Launches The Galaxy Note 10.1, Throws In Smart Stay And 2GB Of RAM, Includes Global Availability

imageAfter a long series of post-MWC changes, Samsung has finally readied its long-awaited flagship Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet and officially announced its global availability. The release schedule is set to start immediately with the United States, United Kingdom, Korea, and Germany, followed by other markets "starting in August." The initial release includes only the Wi-Fi only and the 3G/HSPA+-enabled variants, with the LTE flavor coming later this year.

Note: The press release is a little ambiguous on whether the "starting in August" bit refers to the four aforementioned countries or the following global availability, but we're inclined to side with the latter.

Owners of Sony Mobile's "WhiteMagic" phone, the Xperia P, have been stuck on pre-4.0 software for some time now. This, needless to say, was no fun at all.

However, as can be seen in the above Facebook post from Sony Mobile India, the device will indeed be getting its proper serving of Ice Cream Sandwich sometime between August 19th and August 25th, just as expected.

And now, the (two-week) wait begins for Xperia P users.

[Rumor] HTC Reportedly Working On A Massive 5" 1080p Phone To Be Launched In September-October

2012-08-06_10h36_11According to a new report from DigiTimes (hang on!) this morning, HTC is preparing a new monster flagship phone for launch this fall. The Taiwanese publication says the device will come with a 5" display and a resolution of 1794x1080. If that number sounds a little off to you, it's because those dimensions probably exclude 126 lines to make room for the navigation buttons.

Of course, it's there that the story gets interesting. Typically, manufacturers don't omit lines of resolution from a spec sheet, especially when it would make a nice marketing bullet point like "full 1920x1080 resolution." Neither do supply chain vendors.

Samsung Releases Kernel Source Code For The Korean Carrier-Connected Galaxy Note 10.1

Samsung only made official the Galaxy Note 10.1 last night, but the company has already started releasing kernel source code to its Open Source Developer's Center.

In this case, there are two different versions of the source code available, for model numbers SHW-M480K and SHW-M480S. At first blush it's nearly impossible to cite the differences between the two, but after a bit of digging it looks like these are both carrier-connected 3G versions of the device. The "K" model appears to be for the Korea Telecom (usually just referred to as "KT") branded version and the "S" model applies to the Southern Korean Telecom variant.

Software Root Now Available For Logitech Revue, But It's Not For The Faint Of Heart

For months now, users who wanted to root their Logitech Revue GoogleTV unit were either forced to use hardware modifications or do without. Now, though, Android hacker extraordinaire Dan Rosenberg has found a way to do it completely through software. There's only one problem: it's both extremely difficult and risky. Still, if you're up for a challenge, this one's for you.

This hack uses an exploit called nandpwn, which is explained better on GTVhacker than I could ever do:

A local privilege escalation exploit for the Logitech Revue that leverages the ability to map the hardware registers of the NAND flash controller in conjunction with a Linux kernel information leak to clobber kernel memory in a way that allows gaining privileges.

Last month, owners of Toshiba's 10-inch Thrive tablet were dealt a blow when the manufacturer announced that the tablet's official update to Ice Cream Sandwich would be delayed to "early Fall." This news came several months after Toshiba had initially indicated an "end of Spring" release target for the update.

After all of that, it appears that the Thrive is finally receiving its update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich today – for real this time. The update, which users report taking around 30 minutes to download, is rolling out automatically now.

There's no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S III is the best phone on all four major carriers right now. If you're considering picking one up on Big Red (despite its locked bootloader), you can now score the 32GB version in white or blue from either Amazon Wireless or Wirefly. Yeah, we know: it's a tough choice. First you have to decide which color to buy, then which vendor to buy it from. To make it easier, you could just do a couple of coin tosses. Maybe you'll end up with white from Amazon Wireless. Or perhaps the blue one from Wirefly.

Galaxy Note 10.1 Already Rooted, Requires Odin And A Few Clicks, Won't Break OTA Updates

It seems the announcement of "root for Samsung device x" always manages to occur well before most consumers actually have their hands on it. Today marks yet another such occasion, with the Galaxy Note 10.1 having already been cracked by Zedomax over at the surprisingly aptly-named RootGalaxyNote.com.

rootgalaxynote10.1-690x517

It's so easy that I'm just going to give you the gist, head to the source for the full instructions. Basically, you need a Galaxy Note 10.1, Odin, Samsung USB drivers, and a firmware file. All of this is available there. The one catch is that the root method used here is "pre-injected" firmware, meaning you'll have to flash either a Saudi Arabian / UAE or European firmware to your Note 10.1.

A leaked image of an upcoming device for T-Mobile, dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q (a name that violates no less than three commandments) just surfaced over at TmoNews. As its [awful] name suggests, this appears to be a QWERTY-fied version of the Galaxy S Blaze, though the rumored specs actually point to a bit of an upgrade in the display department, as well:

  • 720p display (size not mentioned)
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB storage
  • HSPA+ 42
  • Slide-out QWERTY
  • Android 4.0

By comparison, the Blaze 4G packs similar specs (sans keyboard), but with a meager 480x800 display and slower Snapdragon S3 (as opposed to the S4 in the Blaze Q).

Update: A post just hit the CM blog verifying what we all suspected: CM9 Stable for all devices will be rolling out tonight. As previously mentioned, this marks the end of development (aside from bug fixes) for CM9 so the team can focus on CM10.

The post also notes that the Maguro build that hit last night actually went up by mistake and shouldn't have been posted until tonight. As a result, a new build (9.0.0.1) will go live with the rest of the stable releases tonight.

Slowly but surely, the CyanogenMod team has been working towards the stable release of CM9 (which is based on Android 4.0).

htc-logo_thumb1Today on Facebook, HTC took to answering some user comments about ICS timelines for a few of its flagship devices. In particular, the manufacturer confirmed that both the Desire S and the Thunderbolt would be receiving updates to Android 4.0 before the end of this month. The latter in particular is good news, as rumors have been circulating that the Thunderbolt would not receive the upgrade after its similarly-specced sibling, the Desire HD had its frozen dessert plans cancelled.

Furthermore, HTC pointed out that all the devices the company has announced an Ice Cream Sandwich update for (read: these) will receive said upgrade by the end August.

In a post to its "Inside Search" blog, Google announced today that several improvements are currently being rolled out to mobile search (for phones and tablets), making some of the engine's quick answers "richer, more beautiful, and more interactive."

In the recent past, users have enjoyed improvements to weather and calculator searches, with handy interactive cards (reminiscent of Google Now's visual style).

Google is now updating a heaping handful of other quick answer features including finance, currency conversion, unit conversion, dictionary definitions, local time lookup, and holiday and sunrise times.

CurrencyConversion - Mobile Finance - Mobile flight status quick answer unit converter

With the aesthetic and functional improvements, Google Search will keep its intuitive quality – for example, a user could search for "how many miles are 42 kilometers" and see an interactive quick answer card with the answer to your query displayed prominently above a host of interactive elements.

Samsung has been working to push Ice Cream Sandwich to the entire Galaxy Tab series as of late. We've already seen it hit the 7.0 Plus Wi-Fi, 7.7, and 10.1. As usual, owners of carrier-connected tablets have to wait a bit longer, as the update has more hoops to jump through before it can get the final approval and make its way to said devices.

Looks like T-Mobile is among one of the first carriers to offer the update for its variant of the Tab 7.0 Plus, and it's scheduled to become available tomorrow. However, this one isn't coming over-the-air (OTA); you'll have to turn to Samsung's proprietary Kies software to grab the download.
