redgsiiiWell, so much for the idea of a patriotic-themed launch party for this device. Still, if you're on AT&T and you're excited about getting your hands on the exclusive red version of Samsung's latest and greatest flagship phone, your wait is about to be at an end. In a few short days, starting on July 15th, AT&T will be offering the device en rouge via pre-order on its site.

The device will land in stores next to the blue and white versions on July 29th. A note to retailers: your opportunity has passed. If you put a stars and stripes border or decorations on your display now, it will just look tacky.

Samsung Open Sources AT&T Galaxy Note ICS Kernel, Official CyanogenMod Nightlies Already Available

att-galaxy-note

Samsung has been on a roll here lately with the source code releases, and it just dropped the ICS kernel code for the AT&T Galaxy Note. That's definitely good news, because no sooner than the code had landed, the CM team went to work on CM9 nightlies for the device almost immediately and pushed the first one out just a little while ago.

image

Definition: A "nightly" is a bleeding edge release that is built on a daily basis, usually at night after a full day's worth of new code has been committed.

It could oftentimes be unstable and not properly tested, lacking any changelogs, but eventually evolving into alphas, betas, release candidates, and finally stable releases.

It may have taken over a month longer than the international version, but HTC has finally released the kernel source code for T-Mobile's version of the One S. HTC has offered no explanation for why the US model's source code was delayed for so long, but perhaps this means that the AT&T One X will see its kernel source released at some point.

They also released the kernel source for the EVO 4G LTE. Developers - or anyone who is interested - can grab the source code from the link below.

Here's some promising news for your Friday the 13th: according to Korean news source Digital Daily, Samsung has scheduled its Unpacked 2012 Episode 2 event for August 30th in Berlin, Germany - and the Galaxy Note 2 is said to be the star of the show.

For the unaware, Samsung holds Unpacked events to unveil its newest flagship devices - like the Galaxy S III, which was announced at the first Unpacked event earlier this year. According the DDaily, we'll hear about the Note 2 this go around, which is said to be sporting some pretty impressive specs, including a 5.5" display with smaller bezel so the device itself is roughly the same size as its predecessor.

Sure, it's not the big daddy HTC One X that those smug jerks over on AT&T are enjoying, nor is it the Galaxy S III that seems to be stealing all the headlines. But 25 greenbacks for HTC's flagship mid-range device - which still beats out pretty much every phone released from a year or more back, and many since - is hard to pass up. That's the price you'll pay for a new HTC One S on T-Mobile's web store, after an eye-popping limited time discount of $175.

Combine that with a $350 subsidy for signing a new or recurring two-year contract and a $50 mail-in-rebate (remember those?) and the grand total for the quite respectable 4.3-inch ICS phone is just $24.99.

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 Is 'In Stock' At Office Depot Web Store For $499

ASUS tablet fans have been eagerly awaiting the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 ever since it was announced, bringing a full 1080p screen panel (not to mention some much-needed wireless improvements) to the company's flagship tablet slot. The TF700 isn't scheduled to go on sale in the US until Monday, July 16th, but Office Depot seems to have jumped the gun. They're currently showing the much anticipated tablet as "in stock", presumably ready to roll out to anyone who pays the $499.99 MSRP. Don't everybody click that link at once, now.

Other go-to online retailers like Amazon aren't showing the TF700, so this is probably a clerical error on Office Depot's part.

Fujifilm Sues Motorola Mobility Over Android Patents, Takes A Comfy Seat On The Bandwagon

fujifilmWhen you try to think of companies that have a motivation to sue over smartphone patents involving Android, Fujifilm may very well be close to the bottom of the list, but you'd be wrong. The company has recently filed a lawsuit against Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility for infringing four of its patents.

The brouhaha began back in April 2011 (for those counting, that's a solid four months before Google even announced its acquisition of the company). Fujifilm claims that several Motorola phones infringe on one or all of the following patents which include, in dramatically oversimplified terms for the layman:

More Leaked Nexus 7 Accessories Surface, Including A Rotating Stand Case, Bluetooth Keyboard Case And More

2012-08-01_11h54_26British gadget site Mobile Fun has some fantastic stuff for us to drool over today. After seeing some premium Nexus 7 accessories just a couple days ago, these new leaked photos show us even more Nexus 7 accessories including (brace yourself) a rotating stand case. In case those words don't make sense to your brain when placed together, here's how it works: it's a protective case that can turn into either a landscape or portrait stand. This is kind of awesome.

Is that not enough for you? Well, there's plenty more where that came from. If you prefer to use your Nexus 7 solely in landscape mode (we'll just assume you're not using the stock interface; to each his own), there will be a landscape-only case/stand along the same vein as one for the Xoom.

If you're just not happy with the current selection of Android devices on U.S. Cellular, two more options are being added to the table: the Motorola Electrify 2 and Defy XT.

Electrify 2

Available online today and in stores tomorrow for $199 after a $100 mail-in-rebate, the Motorola Electrify 2 is (obviously) the successor to last year's original Electrify. This successor is essentially a slightly watered-down Atrix HD, featuring a 4.3" ColorBoost display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Kevlar coating, and Android 4.0.

Update: We've received confirmation from Google that shipping is underway for pre-order customers.

We've just received information suggesting that some Nexus Q's have begun shipping to customers who pre-ordered the device before Google announced yesterday that its launch had been suspended while the device was reworked to not be quite so useless. All pre-order customers were promised their Q's "soon" and free of charge, and apparently when they said soon, they meant it.

We've reached out to Google for confirmation, but this seems like pretty solid evidence to us.

In a post to Google's Android Building group today, Jean-Baptiste Queru once again acted as the bearer of good tidings for developers and tweakers everywhere, announcing that "a new set of proprietary binaries for Jelly Bean are available."

The new batch of binaries includes those of the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G (Crespo and Crespo4G respectively), the latter of which we just recently saw added into the AOSP fold.

The set also includes updates to the both the GSM Galaxy Nexus (maguro), and Verizon's Galaxy Nexus (toro, which itself is ever so close to full AOSP support).

Conspicuously absent from the party is Sprint's variant of the Galaxy Nexus, but there's no surprise there.

HTC Rezound Ice Cream Sandwich Update Finally Starts Rolling Out (v3.14.605.12)

imageAfter countless leaks, a rumor of questionable origin, and a missed target release timeline of June-July, it looks like Verizon has opened the flood gates, and the HTC Rezound ICS update has started rolling out to the first batch of users, just a few days late.

Update: Verizon just officially confirmed.

The 299MB OTA bears the same version 3.14.605.12 that we heard about a few weeks ago and may take several months to become fully available to 100% of devices. That's the bad news.

The good news is that we've actually been in the possession of the full .12 RUU for a while but haven't bothered releasing it unless we could verify it was indeed the final OTA (it seemed too minor compared to the previous .10 leak).

Samsung Starts Production Of New High-Speed Embedded Flash Storage

Samsung-eMMCOne complaint many people have had (particularly with Asus tablets) is that the performance of the embedded storage is just plain bad. So I ran some storage benchmarks (2 apps, 13 metrics) on 11 different devices and compiled the results. In sum: while adequate, most devices aren't exactly speedy in the storage speed department.

That's likely all set to change soon, as Samsung (who, let's not forget, is one of the world's biggest suppliers of everything electronic) has begun production of a new generation of embedded storage. The company claims read speeds of up to 140 MB/s and write speeds of up to 50 MB/s (for comparison, the fastest microSD card on the market checks in at 17 MB/s and 19 MB/s, respectively).

[Exclusive Download] HTC Rezound Ice Cream Sandwich RUU For Final OTA (3.14.605.12)

imageThe HTC Rezound ICS update finally started rolling out today, and what do you know - it looks like the same version 3.14.605.12 that we've been holding onto for a few weeks. Since the OTA version matches the RUU we have, we're releasing it for those who don't necessarily feel like waiting for the staggered update or want an ability to restore back to full stock, or simply want to roll their own custom ROM.

Because I don't have a Rezound myself, I can only verify that the build number in the RUU matches up (3.14.605.12), and there are mentions of 1.16.002 and 2.10.002 which are also both present in the OTA's PRI version.

Samsung Sending Out Invites For August 29th Unpacked Event At IFA 2012 In Berlin, All But Confirms The Galaxy Note 2

Samsung will be holding an event on August 29th at IFA in Berlin. Sound familiar? It should, because Korean news publication Digital Daily outed this event back in mid July. At the time it was said that Samsung would be announcing the Galaxy Note 2, which seems to be highly likely considering the event invite:

1

It doesn't really get any more obvious than that, so we'd be willing to put some money on the table that the next iteration of the Note will definitely be the highlight of the event. Digital Daily didn't stop with event details back in July, either; it also gave some pretty believable specifications about the device, noting that it could have a 5.5" display with a smaller bezel, which should keep the overall device size comparable to the Note 1.

AT&T HTC One X Getting OTA Update To 2.20.502.7 (Android 4.0.4) Eliminating Menu Bar, Giving Users Remapping Options (And Maybe Closing Root)

HTC_One_X_Front_Left_thumb

There's no question – HTC's latest flagship, the One X, is a fantastic device. One major gripe that users have had from day one however (besides broken multitasking) was the pesky menu bar that served to replace its missing capacitive counterpart. Any time users opened an app that wasn't optimized with the Ice Cream Sandwich-style "action overflow" button, the large black bar would appear.

All that is changing for owners of the AT&T-connected One X today though, as a 270MB OTA update (carrying software build 2.20.502.7 and bringing the handset up to ICS 4.0.4) eliminates the bar, instead giving users options to remap the device's multitask key to follow one of three sets of behavior: Always open recent apps, press for menu and long press for recent apps, or press for recent apps and long press for menu.
