Kindle Fire HD 7-Inch Review: "Real" Tablet Or Not, This Is The Future Of Digital Consumerism

wm_IMG_3275

Considering we're a little late to the game on our review of Amazon's newest Kindle Fire, you've probably skimmed through the thoughts of various blogs and news outlets, finding quips like "not a great general computing tablet," or "no match for the Nexus 7's / iPad's performance." And they're right.

The Fire HD is not a good "tablet" in the sense its competitors are (yet), and it's not really a match for the hardware horsepower of its Google-born arch-nemesis, the Nexus 7. But, like I said in my hands-on, comparing the Fire HD to the Nexus is just kind of a mismatch (though you'll read many comparisons in this review, because a lot people are interested in them).

If you have a Galaxy Note on T-Mobile, you're probably worried about things like device updates, considering T-Mo basically ditched it after only a couple weeks of availability. Worry not, because the CyanogenMod team is here to save the day: just one week after the custom Jelly Bean build showed up for the AT&T and International versions of the Note, CM10 Nightlies are now available for T-Mo's variant of the device.

There's a good chance that the bulk of you completely missed the RAZR i announcement. Why? Because it was held in London and happened in the middle of the night for those of us in the US. Apple Seeking $707 Million More In Damages On Top Of The $1 Billion It Already Won Against Samsung

After winning a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung for alleged trade dress dilution and patent infringement, Apple has filed a motion with the presiding judge of the tech world's biggest trial requesting a massive increase in the initial jury award.

An additional $707 million has been tallied up by Apple's lawyers as being due to the company, and unfortunately, the logic here is sound. The jury in the case found Samsung willfully infringed Apple's design and software patents (meaning they should have known they were infringing, basically), and under US statute, this entitles Apple to an award of triple the amount of the actual damages resulting from infringement.

Motorola Software Upgrade Timeline Updated - Many ICS OTAs Delayed

Motorola made some changes to its firmware update timeline this morning. It looks some ICS updates have been delayed, while others that were once promised are now undergoing evaluation. Here's a look at what changed.

  • The Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 were originally slated to get ICS in Q3 of 2012, but have been updated to "further plans coming soon." We're not exactly sure what that means, but it doesn't sound very promising.
  • The Droid XYBOARD 8.2's ICS update was pushed back from Q3 to Q4, despite the fact that its 10.1" brother has been on Android 4.0 since August.
  • The XOOM Family Edition will also have to wait until Q4 to see ICS.

CyanogenMod 10 Nightlies For The LG Optimus Black Are Go

It has been quite a long while since I've heard the name "LG Optimus Black," but it seems that Team CyanogenMod hasn't forgotten about this once-powerful handset. The first CM10 nightly for the 4" handset just showed up on Get.CM, and unlike other CM10 devices, has made this jump directly from CM7.

Definition: A "nightly" is a bleeding edge release that is built on a daily basis, usually at night after a full day's worth of new code has been committed.

It could oftentimes be unstable and not properly tested, lacking any changelogs, but eventually evolving into alphas, betas, release candidates, and finally stable releases.

LG Intuition Review: Quirky Can Be Fun - Unless You Sacrifice Everything To Get There

wm_IMG_1746If you're a close follower of tech, you're probably familiar with the LG Intuition, or at least its European brother, the Optimus Vu. The major selling point: a 5", 1024x768 (4:3) display. Sure, the other specs are noteworthy in that they match other high-end phones, with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 1GB RAM, Android 4.0, and LTE. But that massively wide screen is undoubtedly going to be the talking point.

And talk people will. It's hard not to remark on just how ridiculous it looks and feels. At first, anyway. After using it for a few minutes, though, it suddenly seems somehow normal that it's so absurdly large.

Official Galaxy S III Jelly Bean Update Reportedly Rolling Out In Europe, Starting With Poland

wm_IMG_1429One of the most anticipated OS upgrades in recent Android history has reportedly begun in Europe (specifically, Poland) where official Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean firmware was discovered via Kies a couple of hours ago. Since no carrier marking was attached to the announcement by SamMobile's tracker, it looks like the update applies to the unlocked, unbranded variant localized to Poland - specifically, GT-I9300MBDXEO. Google Now and the updated Google Search, offline speech recognition, Project Butter, expandable notifications - it's all there.

s3jb[3]

Earlier this  month, Samsung promised that the international S III units would start seeing Android 4.1 as soon as October, so it appears the company is actually ahead of schedule.

ux-things-i-hate-about-android Following the initial rollout of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) to Galaxy S III phones in Poland this morning, Samsung has announced that the update will be coming to 15 more devices in other markets "soon."

This latest software update will bring Google Now to a wide range of models and see the frame rate of the entire OS increased thanks to Project Butter.

The devices due to be updated to Jelly Bean are:

  • Galaxy Tab 2.7.0
  • Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
  • Galaxy Note 10.1
  • Galaxy S II
  • Galaxy Note

  • Galaxy S II LTE
  • Galaxy Music
  • Galaxy Chat
  • Galaxy Ace 2
  • Galaxy Beam
  • Galaxy Ace Plus
  • Galaxy Mini II
  • Galaxy S Duos

Although a device called the Galaxy Music is listed here, we aren't entirely sure what it is just yet.

The Nexus 7 Is Now Available In Japan

Hey, do you live in Japan? No? Well that's alright, because you'll still probably be happy to know that Google's first Nexus tablet is expanding its worldwide footprint, and this time it's headed to the land of the rising sun. This also seems to be confirmed on the Japanese Nexus splash page, which lists a price of 19,800 Japanese Yen for the 16GB model.

Japan joins the seven other countries the Nexus 7 is currently sold in - the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and Spain. Google has slowly expanded the Nexus 7's international availability over the months since its release, and this is mostly because the business strategy behind the device has been to sell content - not hardware.

Wirefly Compares The Samsung Galaxy S III To The Apple iPhone 5 In The Newest Schmackdown

imageWe've seen Wirefly Schmackdowns before, but we've never seen one like this. Under normal circumstances, we watch them compare two high-end Android phones. Today, however, they've put mortal enemies in the ring for a fight to the death: the GSIII and the iPhone 5. Oh snap.

They compare the size, weight, display, hardware guts, and software, ultimately calling a winner at the end. Honestly, we're not surprised at how it turns out, but you won't find any spoilers here. Hit play and watch for yourself.

[Update: Not Just Samsung] Exploit Could Force Factory Reset On Many Android Phones

Update 2: This exploit probably won't work on most Galaxy S III's as long as they have the most recent OTA update, as we demonstrate on video here.

Update: This issue is, unsurprisingly, a lot more nuanced than the video here lets on. The bug is based in the stock Android browser, is in fact quite old, and has been patched in more recent builds of Android - this is probably why Nexus devices running the most recent OTAs are unaffected. The fact is, this is not a Samsung problem, it's an old Android problem that has been known about for some time.

[Video] Most Galaxy S III Devices Are Not Vulnerable To USSD Wiping Exploit: It Was Already Fixed In An Update

IMG_1429

There has been a lot of misinformation floating around this morning about an alleged "exploit" on Samsung phones that allows the entire device to be wiped from the browser using what's called a USSD code. Basically, a bit of Android intent code cleverly placed in a web page can call up your dialer and insert a code that wipes the whole device (the USSD code), all without you ever confirming anything.

Unfortunately, everyone (ourselves included) kind of jumped the gun on this without consulting the experts first, and things are more complicated than we thought. Some outlets are reporting that this glitch affects the Samsung Galaxy S III (such as the AT&T version here in the US), but our own evidence suggests otherwise.

ASUS Pushing Jelly Bean To The Transformer Prime (TF201) In Sweden, No Word On Other Countries

The once flagship device of ASUS' Transformer family, the Prime, is now getting its official taste of Jelly Bean in Sweden. This marks the first Android 4.1 OTA to the Prime, coming more than a month after its more affordable cousin, the Transformer Pad 300, saw the update.

image

ASUS notes on its Swedish Facebook page that this update will kill flash support in the Play Store, but it also lovingly provides a link to Adobe's site, where the player can still be downloaded. Good Guy ASUS!

Otherwise, the OTA will remove Wi-Fi Direct support for whatever reason, so if this is something you use often, you may want to stay on ICS for now.

Barnes & Noble To Debut NOOK Video Store - Viacom, Warner, HBO And More On Board As Launch Partners

Going where no book store has gone before (as far as I'm aware), Barnes & Noble announced that it's launching a movie streaming and download service today called NOOK Video. The storefront will offer streaming options from a variety of content partners like Viacom, Warner Bros, HBO, and others. B&N also plans to launch a companion app for the service, which will presumably be available on a variety of Android phones and tablets, as well as the company's Android-powered NOOK tablets.

There's no indication that any of these titles will be rentable, though, and the initial list of partners includes only four of the "big six" movie studios here in the US (Universal and Fox are not listed).

Google Releases 'Tablet App Quality Checklist' To Help Guide Developers On Best Tablet Practices

app-navigation-multiple-sizes-multipane-badIn the ongoing effort to make apps better on Android, Google has released another new guide for the developers who may be looking for guidance on just how to build a great tablet-oriented app. The piece has some fairly detailed information, including how much to adjust padding of UI elements and how to target different screen sizes and resolutions. There is also more broad guidance on how to make the most of larger screen real-estate.

Rumor: Google And Samsung Working On A 10.1" Nexus Tablet With A 2,560 x 1,600 Display - Could This Be The Manta?

I know, I know - more rumors. Right now we all have a bad taste in our mouths from a bit of untruth that was spread throughout the community last week, but it's hard to look the other way when something this juicy turns up. CNet has reportedly gotten confirmation that Google has once again teamed up with Samsung for a Nexus device, only this time the pair are working on a 10.1-inch tablet.

The real story here, though, is the display resolution. According to analyst Richard Shim of NPD DisplaySearch, who shared this information with CNet, the device is said to clock in at a massive 2,560x1,600 resolution, putting the PPI (pixels per inch) at a whopping 299.

Leak: Alleged Images Of The LG Nexus Show Up On XDA Forums

We've been hearing rumors about an LG Nexus for a while now. At first, we were skeptical. However, as the evidence piles up, we're becoming increasingly convinced that this rumor is indeed legit.

Now, a set of photos have surfaced over at the XDA forums that appear to seal the deal.

The first thing you'll probably want to check out in the above shots is the About screen. The device is running Android 4.1.2 and is dubbed "mako," which just so happens to be a type of shark, keeping it in line with the naming scheme of all previous Nexus devices.

Evidence Mounts For LG Nexus – Caseless Photos, NenaMark Results Surface

Earlier this evening, we ran a story containing photos of a purported LG Nexus device obtained (and subsequently photographed) by an XDA user. The photos, along with subtle hints like the presence of a Qualcomm modem and kernel, and the presence of a corroborating FCC filing, had us leaning toward the "legit" side of the rumor spectrum.

Now, it looks like a user of a Belarusian forum called Baraholka (which roughly translates to "flea market") has more photos of the device, posted last week – this time lacking what appeared in previous photos to be a shell or casing that disguised the device's real curves (similar to the case we saw on early Galaxy SIII units).
